Random Acts of Poetry

Please take time to visit the High Callings Blog poetry page for this week.  There is a inspiring poem and video by Christine Sine of Godspace called Reflections on Lent.  All the poems this week are very well done and so encouraging.  Here are the links from the High Calling page:

  • AndyC of The Narrow Road wrote For Me.
  • Lavonda wrote  What is Required.
  • Marcus posted a video reading of excerpts from T. S. Eliot’s Ash Wednesday.
  • Although not officially poetry, Megan Willome wrote a kind of prose poem meditation about Lent that was so good Marcus wanted to link to it here. Similarly, Satchel Pooch’s Ash Wednesday Blogaround reads like a poetry. Beautiful posts worth checking out.
  • nAncY’s On the Road
  • The Unknown Contributor’s Orchid
  • 12 Steps Closer’s Haiku for Jesus: The Crazy at Night

What I Learned From A Sidewalk

timothy lepas Robert over at Middle Zone Musings has posted his monthly writing assignment.  As he would put it, you can mosey on over and check it out here.  So as I ponder the question, what I learned from a sidewalk, here is my simple answer.

Having fun in life brings joy.  I am the mother of six children and they believe sidewalks are for playtime (of course to a child everything is play).  Picture chalk drawings, four square, and hopscotch boards.  Or maybe the fun game of “step on a crack and break your mothers back”.   My older boys use the sidewalk curbs to grind on their skateboard or do other skateboard “tricks”.

From the safety of a sidewalk little ones love the freedom to run ahead of mom.  Fun within the confines of boundaries and safety produces joy.  God’s Word teaches us that I think as well.  God wants us to have a joyful life, These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”  John 15:11  What are “these things” that make our joy full?  John 15 states that abiding in him – staying on the sidewalk – is key to having His joy.  tony ice sledding

Now sometimes God stretches us to get out of our comfort zones to attempt challenging things.  Things that are outside the box and off the sidewalk.  However, letting those things flow from a position of sidewalk living (abiding in Him) is the best place to find joy.

    Childlike Poetry

I have no poetry flowing this week.  However, Princess daughter (8 yo) wrote a sweet poem:

    February 2009 008

    Sunshine and meadows

    are such a sight,

    When I see flowers

    It’s such  delight.

It is so encouraging to watch them attempt to develop writing skills.

    Lost Follower

Just reading blogs missed from Sunday and yesterday.  When I checked in at Jennifer’s blog, GDWJ, I found I had been lost as a follower.   Ouch.  It is like a friend who drops out of your life without a word and you wonder what happened.

But thanks to Sarah at God’s Not Finished with Us Yet I was able to correct this problem.  The blogs I have been following have become like precious friends who live a long way from home.  They share words of encouragement at just the right time.  Spiritual insight is gained through their honesty and wisdom.   With vulnerability they open their lives.    Maybe this is a sharing of community as Erica speaks about here.

So in case you see someone removed from following, you will know it is not personal, it is a blogger glitch as Sarah states here.  Just passing the word along in case the same has happened to anyone else.

    Working Man

February 2009 032Today was a day to spend with Precious Husband.  He has been working a lot at the fire department this past week.  The station he is at today is rather friendly about letting families come by and hang out.  I thought it would be nice to take the day off from schooling, let older children care for younger children, so dad and mom could have time to reconnect.

I arose and got myself looking presentable for dear husband.   A darling friend agreed to watch princess daughter.   I’m driving to cook lunch for said husband and firefighter coworkers when precious husband calls and informs me he is heading to a call but should be back within the hour.  That is great with me, time for me to have lunch ready.   They return to the station about 30 minutes shy of lunch being ready.

Just as we sit down to enjoy the meal I prepared (lasagna, salad, and garlic bread – yummy), the alert tone goes off and firefighters are out the door.  Today they have a structure fire to take care of.   I pray a prayer – safety, protection, and little damage to building.  Alone I continue with the meal.

Unfortunately the house was a total loss.  Prayers said forFebruary 2009 038 - Copy the family.  Thankfully it is a lake residence, second home, and no one was injured.  But it was five hours later before precious husband and coworkers returned.  Thankfully we were able to enjoy a nice dinner together and share little time before princess daughter had to be picked up.

Sometimes things don’t work out exactly like we plan.  Then it is our choice how we respond.  I’m sad I did not have more time with my hard working man.  I am grateful that no one was hurt and we enjoyed the lasagna – even if it was a bit later than planned.  Plus I was blessed with a few quiet hours to read, pray, and even call a friend to chat uninterrupted.

“…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”  Philippians 4:11b

Father – Thank you for Precious husband, for protection and safety over firefighters.  Thank you that no one was injured in the fire,  be with the family as they deal with this loss.  Thank you for quiet time and time shared with husband.

    How Do You See God?

While reading Jennifer’s blog, What Does God look like?, and Rob G.’s response, I was reminded of a poem I wrote several months back for a writing class I was taking.

    Victory

I see Jesus in the pain etched on your face.
    The desperation of Loneliness,
                                                   Rejection,
                                                          Betrayal,
                                                                Abandonment.
For He also suffered these same agonies,
Learning obedience to His Heavenly Father.
Restoring, redeeming from the hand of the enemy,
The treasure of life that comes from the hours of darkness.

                                           -Nancy Kourmoulis

I also have this picture of Jesus in my mind….

    The Truth

What are the voices I listen to?  The voice in my head that accuses me of not being adequate, capable to mother the children in my care.  That I am a failure in training them in Godliness.  The voice that day-in and day-out seeks to discourage me.  Is this the voice I listen to?  Why is this voice so loud?

But if I will STOP, listen, there is another voice I hear.  Softly and gently it whispers in my ear.  “I tell you the truth…”  Jesus said this so often in the gospels.  “I tell you the truth…”  “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him" (Mt. 6:8)  “have faith and do not doubt” (Mt. 21:21) “whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mk 11:24; Jn. 16:23)  “whoever hears my words and believes Him who sent me has eternal life” (Jn. 5:24) “my Father gives you the true bread of heaven” (Jn 6:32) .

My Father knows I am incapable of raising Godly children.  He knows what I need.  I need to have faith that He is able.  Since He is able, I can believe that I can do all things because He strengthens me  (Philippians 4:13).  I can believe that He tells me the truth.  After all, He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. (Jn. 14:6)

Father – when the way grows hard and I grow weary, help me to stop and listen to the truth.  You are all the provision I need, You are the provision for my children.  Thank You that You lead us in the way we should go.   Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit who guides me into all truth.  Jesus, thank You for speaking with such a kind, gentle voice.  That the words You speak are Truth.

    In Jesus,

    Nancy

    Awaken

    February 2009 002

Awakening to the sounds of spring,
    Birds twittering in the trees,
Awakening to the signs of spring,
    Daffodils raise their joyful heads,
Awakening to the touch of spring,
Soft, green grass beneath my toes,
Awakening to the smell of spring,
Fragrant breezes brush against my face,
Awakening to the feel of spring,
The warm sun shines and breaks the hold,
Awakening from the cold of winter,
    As creations beauty again unfolds.

    Worship

So I am thinking about truth and how one responds to Truth.   Scripture defines Truth as the person of Jesus Christ.  Truth is defined as conformity with reality at www.dictionary.com .  I want to conform to the reality that Jesus is the Truth and I must worship Him as such.

    John 4:24
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

What is worship?   Worship is defined in the Hebrew - Shachah – to bow down.  In the Greek proskunevw – to kiss the hand, in token of reverence.  The American Heritage Dictionary defines worship - the ceremonies, prayers, or other religious forms by which this love is expressed.   I love this definition…forms by which love is expressed.

By what form do you express your worship of Jesus?  Music is a big way for me to worship.  Song written by psalmist that speak to my soul and guide me to expressing love for Jesus.

    One Truth

King of Glory (by Chris Tomlin)

Lift up your gaze Be lifted up
Tell everyone How great the love
The love come down From heaven's gate
To kiss the earth With hope and grace

    Sing
Who is this King of Glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty

Lift up your hands Be lifted up
Let the redeemed Declare the love
We bow down At heaven's gate
To kiss the feet Of hope and grace

    There is one God
    He is Holy
    There is one Lord
    Over everything
    There is one King
    He is Jesus
    King of glory
    Strong and mighty

You are the King of Glory
    The Lord, strong and mighty

In seeking and finding I am reminded – there is

    ONE TRUTH,

ONE GOD, ONE LORD, ONE KING

    HE IS JESUS!

    Scripture Only Sunday

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God." Philippians 1:9-11

    Truth

"Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it."   Blaise Pascal
     Seek_Truth_by_BeautifullyEvil

What is truth?  “Jesus answered, I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life…” John 14:6.

I am reading a book by Nancy Pearcey entitled Total Truth.  She says, “Every system of thought begins with some ultimate principle. …This starting assumption has to be accepted by faith, not by prior reasoning. … Faith is a universal human function, and if it is not directed toward God it will be directed toward something else.”

2 Corinthians 10:5 states, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Nancy Pearcey goes on to say, “The danger is that if Christians do not consciously develop a biblical approach to the subject (she is speaking of worldview), then we will unconsciously absorb some other philosophical approach…”  She says we must develop our own “tools of analysis” in order to be “salt and light to a lost culture.”  This way we do not end up being shaped by that culture.  “We must be convinced that there is a biblical perspective on everything-not just on spiritual matters.”

Jesus is the truth and everything I believe must flow from that reality.  I do not need to borrow from the tools of the world’s philosophy to understand the truth.  I need to demolish those arguments and only be obedient to Christ.

Father – May all my thoughts be Your thoughts.  Let The Truth rule in my life.   Help me to pass these truths, reality, on to the children You have gifted to me.  Help me to think about what I am thinking about and may those thoughts honor You.

    In Jesus,

    Nancy

    Pleasant Surprise

Between staying up late to watch videos of an online Bible class I am attempting, doing research for this class, and getting up early to see Precious Husband off to work, I am tired.  The last two mornings I have gone back to sleep after Precious Husband left the house for work.  Our darling children have been so gracious to let me sleep late.

Then this morning it happened.  Such a pleasant surprise.

    Our two youngest children

            (ages 8   February 2009 015                 & 9   February 2009 045 )

cooked and served me breakfast in bed.  Our 9 year old scrambled eggs and baked biscuits (hubbie calls them whop biscuits because you whop the can on the counter to open them).  Our 8 year old cut up oranges and fixed my coffee (she added the perfect amount of cream and sugar).  Then they brought it to me in bed on a tray.  As Princess daughter walked back to kitchen to eat her breakfast she looked over her shoulder and said, Happy Valentine's Day Mom.

Some days you feel like you are getting it right as a mother.  I like those days!  Then I remember – it’s not me – it’s God.  He alone is responsible for everything pleasant in my life.  That makes the gift all the more special.

Father, thank You for the gift of today.  For loving children who surprise me with their kindness and thoughtfulness.  For every good gift that You give!

    In Jesus,

    Nancy

    Once Upon a Time

L.L. over at Seedlings in Stone issued an invitation, here is my response.

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him - but God has revealed it to us by His Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10

    Once Upon a Dream...

Once upon a time there was a young girl who had a dream.
Daily she would dance and work and sing while pondering the dream.
She was joyful and content while waiting on the dream.
Days and years went by, she clung tightly to the dream.
The work grew heavy, her flesh grew weak, dimming the dream.
Deep in her heart was a glimmer of hope, a tiny spark of the dream.
Though her body grows old she has confidence in the dream.
With patient desire she longs for the fulfillment of the dream.

    Scripture Only Sunday

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5

    Words of Wisdom - Updates

My post Thursday was from a challenge at It's Almost Naptime!! She asked for words of wisdom from mom's whose children were past preschool age. Here is a link to all the posts she received from mom's. Have a blessed weekend.

    25th Anniversary Year

The year is 1983 and boy do we look young!! We had been dating just over a year and just gotten engaged. Wow, the time has gone by really quickly. Here we are 27 years later about to celebrate 25 years of married life. I am so honored to be the wife of this Precious man and mother to our six children.

He keeps me grounded, focused, challenged. He still makes me laugh and yes, I shiver at his touch. He is my best friend, the one who accepts me and loves me. He makes me feel secure and cherished. He has always introduced me to new things - jet skiing, new foods, snow skiing, our newest thing - hunting. I love that he is not afraid to try new things and that he wants all of us to try them with him.

We are raising six children together. Such joy and torture (we have teenagers). I am so grateful we share this journey together. We have four sons and I have no clue what they are thinking most of the time. Boys...so grateful for husband to help guide. We also have two lovely daughters. I can relate to them, occasionally he can also.

"When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor." Psalm 8:3-5

Father - I am grateful for the Precious Husband you have graced me with. God, how gracious You are that You care for me. Cared enough to bless me with Precious husband. That You joined us to fit together, flesh of his flesh, bone of his bone, one flesh. Father, may we be a reflection of Your glory!

    In Jesus,

    Nancy

    Word of Wisdom

Normally I do not do two posts a day. But from a devotion website I read, I ran across this wonderful blog. She gave a challenge I feel honored to try and answer. As the homeschooling mom2six-treasures, ages 19 (newly married), 16, 15, 12, 9, and 8, four boys and 2 girls, maybe I have a few words of wisdom I can offer to preschool moms. I continue to learn on this journey and have made many mistakes. But here are the few insights I have to offer.

Don’t stress over what they won’t eat. They will eat enough to keep themselves alive. Also let them eat what you are cooking. Reduce the stress.

When you are out shopping and you have two in a stroller and one child roaming free, put the free roamer on a lease of some kind. It will save you from a heart attack when they decide to play hide-and-seek in the circular clothes rack.

Be willing to say no and mean it. No you can’t play in the street, you can’t watch that show, you can’t run around the mall, you can’t wear that outfit. Give them boundaries.

Read, read, read. With child #1 we read constantly. After #2, #3, & #4 came along within 5 years I was just trying to survive so reading fell away. Child #1 loves to read, #’s 2,3,&4 not so much. I think Child #1 read to #5&6 when they were little, so I have three readers (#1,5&6), 1 occasional reader(#3), and 2 only if I have to readers(#2&4).

Give them time to spend alone in their own space. Whether it is a naptime (required around here until they were 6), or just quiet time with a book or favorite toy. This is good for them to develop thinking skills and for you to get a break. Give them time to dream.

Hug and cuddle often. My teenagers (boys 16 & 15) still hug on me to this day. Admittedly not it public, but I am still blessed at home! Give them physical affection.

Give them chores early. Start by letting them pick up their toys, take their plate to the kitchen. It is so much easier to keep a house when everyone is doing a part than just relying on mom to get ‘er done. Not perfect, just easier.

Let them work in the yard with dad. Let them push the mower. Let them help fix the car, change the oil. Let them paint, help hang sheetrock. Let them help build the house. When they are little they ask to do these things, let them "help" now so they will learn to do the work as they grow.

Teach them to cook. Little ones can stir the soup, mix the casserole, cut the biscuits. I can remember being pregnant with child #4, child #1 was 6yo and would make sandwiches for everyone for lunch. When the stay-at-home for 17 years mom had to go back to work for a while, they had learned to help out. It was so wonderful to come home to a meal already prepared. After all, they were home from school earlier than I was from work.

Also chores are not just boy and girl chores. Boys will have clothes and dishes to wash, girls will have cars to drive and homes to fix. Give them a good work ethic.

Hang out with grandparents often, take them with you on vacations, eat with grandparents, talk to them. The time with them passes too quickly. Give them heritage, family.

Go to the park, the zoo, hiking, bike riding, swimming, be there with them. Look at what catches their attention. Enjoy frogs and snakes, especially if you have boys, even if they are creepy to you. Give them yourself.

Enjoy your spouse. Hire a babysitter. Go on dates often. Somewhere I read the greatest gift you can give your children is to love their “mother/father”. Except for giving them an opportunity to know Jesus, this is the second greatest thing to do for your children. Give them love, stability, security.

Take them to church, sing together, read and discuss the Bible together. Give them a good foundation.

    Thankful Thursday

    151. Projects to share together, building a doll house for Princess daughter.

    152. Warm soup, sandwich, and free coffee. Thanks to CoffeeTeaBooks&Me for posting about the free coffee day last week. It was a relaxing, quiet afternoon with book and journal while Precious husband watched children.

    From Parent to Child

My gold-hearted mom was doing some cleaning last week and came across this poem she has held on to. She passed it along to me and I in turn pass it along to you. Unfortunately it does not have an author listed. But how I need the wisdom it gives.

I gave you life, but I cannot live it for you.
I can teach you things, but I cannot make you learn.

I can give you directions, but I cannot be there to lead you.
I can allow you freedom, but I cannot account for it.

I can take you to church, but I cannot make you believe.
I can teach you right from wrong, but I cannot always decide for you.

I can buy you beautiful clothes, but I cannot make you beautiful inside.
I can offer you advice, but I cannot accept it from you.

I can give you love, but I cannot force it upon you.
I can teach you to share, but I cannot make you unselfish.

I can teach you respect, but I cannot force you to show honor.
I can advise you about friends, but I cannot choose them for you.

I can advise you about sex, but I cannot keep you pure.
I can tell you the facts of life, but I cannot build your reputation.

I can tell you about drink, but I cannot say "NO" for you,
I can warn you about drugs, but I cannot prevent your using them.

I can tell you about loft goals, but I cannot achieve them for you.
I can teach you about kindness, but I cannot force you to be gracious.

I can warn you about sins, but I cannot make your morals.
I can love you as a child, but I cannot place you in God's family.

I can pray for you, but I cannot make you walk with God.
I can teach you about Jesus, but I cannot make Jesus your Lord.

I can tell you how to live, but I cannot give you Eternal Life.

For all our teaching and training we cannot make our children accept our values. We can only live them out before them and pray they accept, cling to, follow the footsteps of the Master. Yet I look at were I fail in following His footsteps and pray His grace, His love covers my multitude of sins. That Jesus alone will fill in the gaps.

    In Jesus,

    Returning to Blogworld

It was so fun to open my blogsite and see all your lovely comments. They each brought a smile to my face. Thanks so much for thinking of us as we were "hunting." I use that term lightly because really what we were doing was sitting. Sitting in a deer standing waiting to see if any deer would actually come by. I am sad to report that after two days we were not able to kill a deer. The first day we did not see anything, except birds, and challenge son reported seeing a bobcat and people hiking in the woods.

Day two brought a little more success. We actually saw deer and challenge son took a shot (two actually). Unfortunately, he missed. Too bad because I was already cooking that deer in my mind. :)

Even though we were deprived of sleep, we got up Friday morning at 3:00 am, yes, you read that right, we had a lot of fun. The elder two boys spent their time hunting with me and the younger two boys went with Precious Husband. Prairie Chick, I had things covered in case we shot a deer. I figured that between 15 and 16 year old boys we could put that deer on top of the minivan and drive it home!

But I did get some reading and journaling done as well as being goofy with teenage sons. In the midst of looking for deer God pointed out that I was looking for Him during this season. Hunting is rather like "seek and you will find". Precious husband has taken the boys several times over the last month, I was just privileged to go the last few days. As they have been hunting they have seen signs that deer are there, tracks, bedding sites, and poop, but until the last few days have not seen any deer.

Sometimes our spiritual lives are like that. We are hunting for God. We know He is there, we see the signs - His creation, provision. Then suddenly, just like a deer stepping out of the forest to be seen, God steps our of the forest of our lives and we find Him. There in the midst of a field we see Him in all His glory, just as we saw the doe. The doe was there, right on the edge of the forest, waiting for the right time to come clearly into the opening. God is there, right on the edge of our hearts, waiting for the right time to clearly reveal Himself to us. His timing is always perfect - to get our attention, to teach us more about Himself, to enlighten the eyes of our understanding.

And I think that just like the more opportunities you give yourself for hunting deer the better your odds of finding deer correlate to the more opportunities you give yourself for hunting for God the better your odds of finding Him in your daily life.

So these are my thoughts as I return from our hunting adventure. Hope you all have had a wonderful end to last week and I look forward to reading what has been happening.

Father - thank you for the opportunity to be in the midst of your creation. To see the beauty of a sunrise and sunset, to hear the birds sing your glory, to laugh with sons. God you are good and so willing to be found. Thank you for being an I AM God, the God of now, present, not just in time, but in person.

    In Jesus,
    Nancy

I am still trying to figure out how to get photos of Precious husband's phone of him and younger two boys. Technology, wonderful and frustrating all at the same time.

    Thankful Thursday...Ahhh Sunday

I am doing my Thankful Thursday today since I was hunting on that day and today is the actual birthday of our #3 son (#4 child).

    I am thankful for...

    150. Birthdays and friends to share them with. Fun son and friends (twins) were born 1 week apart 12 years ago. They have been friends since they were 5. What a blessing.

    Scripture Only Sunday
