I make lists also: to do lists, grocery lists, gratitude lists, books to read lists, chore lists. These lists keep me focused on the task at hand, items that are necessary to live life, or moments that are important.
I’m beginning to see Julia’s lists as alters – places where something sacred has happened or is happening in life.
Whether it is a list of places lived or accomplishments to be proud of or things that make one happy, the lists give credibility to life. The lists remind of happy right now moments, days long gone, and I can even see how the lists could carry through difficult times (I think of my gratitude list).

This list making as building altars...hmm. I just love that, Nancy! I"ve never thought of it that way, but when I do it right, that's exactly what it is.
ReplyDeleteThank you for making me pause this morning!
I liked the same thing Laura did, about the altars. It stood out quietly and uniquely. (And redeemed, just a little, my feeling about lists! :)
ReplyDeletei have so many lists, i need to make a list of lists just to keep them all straight :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm a maker of lists as well, Nancy. And much for the same reason as you...keeps me focused.
ReplyDeleteViewing them as altars is a new thought, but the more I think on it the more I like that idea. It truly is a commitment of how I spend my time.
Thanks for sharing!
"writing is a form of cherishing"--counting back over the tiny marvels"--I love that!
ReplyDeleteMaybe that is why I love writing so much--keeping track of the tiny marvels--what better way to do it than blogging, huh? Even though my well seemed empty earlier today, you have helped "fill me back up."
