A burning heart

DSC00347

The land, burned and barren waits.  After an accidental spark from a fire starter, a raging inferno consumes 20 acres of dry brush.

The words spill from my mouth onto tender ears.  Spoken in anger they burn windpipe, spewing soul scars.  All are left broken, consumed by the rage.

DSC00523

A few weeks later the soil is plowed.  The beginning preparations to plant seeds.  The land still waits.

Daily I’m desperate, slowing my speech.  Gently God’s Spirit leads into freedom, teaches me how to tame my tongue.  The yelling yields as I whisper God’s Word.  Planting seeds of contrition, seeking forgiveness, fighting for freedom.

Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.  Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only to evil.  For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.  Psalm 37:7-9

Anger has been a burden, a sin, God has been delivering me from for years.  In the process of a class on Freedom: Living an Abundant Life on Wednesday nights I have had the privilege to remember how God has worked in my life in this area.  In speaking with my children I remember how horrible, guilty, dirty I felt when I would lose control of my temper and tongue.  God has cultivated repentance, a desire for transformation through the Word, and a life of forgiveness.  We all have seen how far God has brought this earthen vessel.  My heart burns redemption glory.  Because of the resurrection of a sacrificial Savior I am trusting Jesus to deliver a harvest of righteousness.

HCB Monster Poetics

“I’ve never been much of a monster woman myself, yet I see the possibilities….Okay, so for all of us who never wanted to look at the monsters under the bed, this week’s prompt is a real challenge. Write a poem about (or from the viewpoint of) some kind of monster.”  These words of challenge from L.L. Barkat and these from Marcus Goodyear… “We can pretend our monsters don’t exist, but that lie won’t help us prepare to fight them….The real monsters aren’t out there. They are inside.”

As a child I was afraid to look under the bed, for there could be monsters there.  As an adult I look within and find the truth.  I did not want to see the monster inside.  But with the help of Father God I have had to look there.  To face…

                              The Beast Within
Ascending from the dark
Escapes from lips a savage bark
Creeping slowly from its bed
    Biting every little head
Piece by piece it makes a meal
    Nature refuses crime to feel
Fingers chill, snake up the back
    Wringing life from chosen track
Into the ruined monster Deliverer flows
    Releasing chains with mighty blows
Descending, drowning squealing it goes
    Tumbling hard upon the nose
View from ground reveals fate
Of words that spewed full of hate
Covered in blood monster cries
    Gruesome death the creature dies
Surrounding water envelopes beast
    Famished new nature immediately feasts
As heart transplanted begins to beat
    Master Creator reveals His feat
Piece by piece He begins to assemble
In image of Son it beings to resemble
Transformed, recreated by pierced hand
    Regenerate life amazingly grand

         (Nancy Kourmoulis 4/26/10)

“Regarding Zion, I can't keep my mouth shut, regarding Jerusalem, I can't hold my tongue, Until her righteousness blazes down like the sun and her salvation flames up like a torch. Foreign countries will see your righteousness, and world leaders your glory. You'll get a brand-new name straight from the mouth of God. You'll be a stunning crown in the palm of God's hand, a jeweled gold cup held high in the hand of your God. No more will anyone call you Rejected, and your country will no more be called Ruined. You'll be called Hephzibah (My Delight), and your land Beulah (Married), Because God delights in you…”  Isaiah 62:1-4 (The Message)

Just a Minute

To look someone in the eye and really ask, How are you?
To pick up the phone and call a friend.
To put a few lines of thanks on a card and drop it in the mail.
These things begin in just a minute.  Yet how often do I let days, months, years slide by without really investing in others.  Others that I care about, that have been important in my life.  So this week I set aside 15 minutes to “write out loving greetings to your friends” as suggested by Julia Cameron.
In the chapter titled, The Time Lie, Ms. Cameron writes:
Taking the time to write in our lives gives us the time of our lives.  As we describe our environments, we begin to savor them.
This is part of the reason I began journaling years ago.  Taking just a minute to record a Scripture verse, something funny one of the kids said or did, a prayer through dark times.  Journaling was a way to savor this life – the good and the bad.  Over the last several years those minutes have begun stretching.  I find myself attempting poetry to describe my life and feelings.  Is it good poetry?  Occasionally.  Mainly it speaks to me and helps me define my life.  Ms. Cameron explains:
Writing will fill your heart if you let it.  It will fill your pages and help to fill your life.
April 2010 038So I took the books with me to the farm.  From the seat of an ATV I read and the last two Initiation Tools left me amazed.  First at how many different styles of writing I would like to take an adventure with and then at the experience itself.
So I set the minutes on the timer and began to write.  Wondering how I would ever be able to write for 30 minutes. Then wondering how to stop when the alarm chimed.

Scripture Only Sunday

April 2010 019

“But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.  Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father".”  So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.”

Stringing a Line

April 2010 012 As I was stringing lines in our garden to make the rows straight parenting thoughts came to my mind. How as parents, guided by our Heavenly Father, we seek to lay a straight path for our children to follow. They must then decide whether to follow or not. Even in the following there are clumps and ruts that get in the way and cause the lines to swerve. Isn’t life truly like this.

Hoe in hand the soil is turned to make it softer. Choices, keep to God’s line and hearts tender or wander away and harden hearts. The paths they choose will lead away from us down the line God has for them. May His ways be the line they are following – no matter where it leads.

Our children come behind and plant the April 2010 009seeds and give those seeds the nutrients needed to grow. May they plant seeds that will grow bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control.

We all wait for the harvest. After all, God alone is Lord of the harvest.

Billy Coffey over at The High Calling Blog stated our purpose as parents so well. His last lines, written now in my journal, will stay with me a long time. They will encourage me as I walk the rows in this garden with our children. Reminding them of The One who lays the line for us all to follow.

A sentence from the back cover, “We should write because writing April 2010 045brings clarity and passion to the act of living.”
I have been “writing” in a journal for years. It truly brings clarity for me as I live the adventure of my life. For over a year I have been “writing” this blog. Sharing the passion of my heart from daily living.
I am impressed with how at ease Ms. Cameron is with writing. “What if writing were simply about the act of writing?” I long to just put thoughts on paper, to listen and become a storyteller. Ms. Cameron encourages me further…“What if we didn’t have to be good at writing? What if we got to do it for sheer fun?”
My fingers pause and I listen. Could I do this? My heart cries, wouldn’t it be a thrill to try? I grab a pencil and paper, let’s write!

Scripture Only Sunday

DSC00401 This is how God showed his love for us:

God sent his only Son into the world

so we might live through him.

This is the kind of love we are talking about—

not that we once upon a time loved God,

but that he loved us and sent his Son as a

sacrifice to clear away our sins and

the damage they've done to our

relationship with God.

As One

“Once upon a time there was nora birthday - Copya young man and woman

Whose lives were fully joined

“Flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone”

Years sped by for the man and woman

Their lives brimming with chores and children

Some days were joyful, some were a struggle

Yet each endeavor is weaving them tighter until

They are entwined as one.”

Nancy Kourmoulis

Today Precious husband and I celebrate 26 years of marriage.  If you consider our dating years we have been together 28 years.  I love this man more deeply every day of every year that passes.  By God’s grace He has been the cord that has made us one.

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”  Ecclesiastes 4:12

How Quickly…Continued

How quickly life can be turned on end.  We had a minor crisis last week.  A child had a fender bender on the way to work.  Thankfully said child is okay – even though shaken from the experience.  At this moment we still don’t know how the other driver is doing, so we pray.  The emotions from our weekend of fun at the farm quickly turned to gasping for breath fear with the call to come to the scene.(The gasping and fear is on my part.  Precious husband aka dad -fire/medic that he is - stays calm in these situations.  For this I am grateful!)

I can only imagine the emotions the disciples must have experienced the last week of Christ life.  From the excitement of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the anguish of his crucifixion and burial to the wonder of his resurrection.  Last week I wondered how Peter must have felt the night Christ was beaten and bruised.  Peter betrayed the man he believed, by his own admission, to be the Son of God.

I can only image the hope and fear that must have been racing through Peter’s soul upon hearing the words of Mary Magdalene that Jesus was alive.  Perhaps his thoughts went something like this…

What in the world is this woman talking about?  They have taken Jesus body?   I have to see the empty tomb for myself.

It is true, the tomb is empty.  Not only have they killed the Son of God, now they have stolen his body.  Or could John be right, could Jesus really be alive?  If he is alive how can I ever face him again?  I have been such a coward.  All my bold words have meant nothing.  I betrayed him when he needed me most.

Jesus is risen!  He materialized right before our eyes.  We were meeting together, doors locked even, Jesus came and stood right in the middle of the room.  His pierced hands - I. have. seen. them.  His voice, so robust, encouraging us, “Peace be with you!  As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”  Then Jesus breathed on us.  His breath, the fragrance of eternal life, stirred my hair.  His words penetrated my heart, “Receive the Holy Spirit.  If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”  Jesus forgives.”

How quickly Peter’s life changed.  He went from fear and failure to forgiveness and faith.  From this point forward, after seeing and talking with the resurrected Jesus, Peter is consumed with sharing the message of the gospel with others.  Before the Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost, the disciples stay continually at the temple praising God.  On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up in the crowd and preached with such authority that 3,000 were “cut to the heart” and chose to follow Jesus.

Again “Standing on the Promises” comes to mind.  This time verse three.  I think Peter could have sang this verse with gusto.

“Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
bound to him eternally by love's strong cord,
overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword,
standing on the promises of God.” Text: R. Kelso Carter, 1849-1926

"But what about you?" Jesus asked. "Who do you say I am?"  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.  I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."  Matthew 16:15-19

Father – fear and failure, I wallow here too often. Jesus, forgive me. Holy Spirit help me lean by faith into your power at work all around. Thank you for hope and eternal life through the glory of your resurrection.

Scripture Only Sunday

DSC00453 “Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb?”  But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.  As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.  “Don’t be alarmed,” he said, “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified.  He has risen!  He is not here.”  Mark 16:2-6

Encouragement from a Criminal

Christ hangs upon the cross, his life ebbing out of the mortal body with which divinity robed him.  He has been betrayed, mocked, rejected, beaten, pierced, and he suffers alone.

And yet ---

Don’t you fear God since you are under the same sentence?  We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve.  But this man has done nothing wrong.  Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”  Luke 23:40-42

05_08_10-Cross-at-Sunset_web Such faith, such understanding from this dying man hanging beside Jesus.  This criminal suffers the same agony of body.

I wonder if he knew how he reminded me, in my weakest hour, what I was here for?

Of course I would remember him when I came into my kingdom.” David Nasser, Glory Revealed

Today you will be with me in paradise.”  Luke 23:43
